Quran memorization guide
How to Build a Quran Revision (Murajaah) Routine
Build a Quran murajaah routine that protects old memorization while you continue learning new material.
Revision needs its own quota
Do not treat murajaah as something you do only when you have spare time. Give revision a fixed place in the day, just like new memorization. As your hifdh grows, revision should usually grow with it.
Separate recent and old revision
Recent memorization needs frequent contact because it is still fragile. Older memorization can be placed into a rotating cycle. Keeping those two categories separate makes it easier to see where weakness is developing.
- Recent: yesterday, the last few days, and the current memorization block.
- Old: previously memorized pages rotated across the week or month.
Use active recall for weak sections
If you only read along, you may overestimate how well you know a passage. Close or hide the Mushaf and recite. Mark where you hesitate, then target those locations with extra repetition.
Adjust new memorization when revision breaks
When old material is consistently weak, temporarily reduce the amount of new memorization. This is not going backward; it is protecting the foundation that makes future progress useful.
